The Maritime Experiential Museum
How to get there by Singapore MRT. Singapore interactive metro guide.
The Maritime Experiential Museum, the structure for which takes the form of a capsized boat, is situated on the resort Sentosa Island and is the first and only museum in the world devoted solely to Asia’s maritime history.
Its interactive expositions tell the history of seafaring trade in Singapore and the process of local shipbuilding in interactive way. They also give visitors an opportunity to make a trip along the ancient Maritime Silk Road, simultaneously outlining the history, culture and traditional customs of the Asian peoples. Some exhibitions are devoted to legendary seafarers and famous Oriental pirates, while elsewhere, a medieval trade vessel, surrounded with models of the goods that it used to deliver to the Asian countries, is installed inside the Maritime Experiential Museum. A large number of installations, touchpads and video walls make the museum’s expositions more accessible to younger visitors, while remaining educational and informative for all.
The museum’s multimedia panoramic cinema, Typhoon Theatre, offers the virtual opportunity to be present on a vessel about to be shipwrecked and leaves some truly unforgettable impressions. Visitors are invited on board the Chinese junk, which drowned off Singapore shores in 9th century: the sky becomes darker, the wind becomes stronger, the boat rocks and lurches, before finally ending up on the ocean floor, taking the passengers with it.
Several shops selling original maritime souvenirs operate on museum’s premises.
