El complejo impecable de Lian Shan Shuang Lin, es la sagrada budista más antigua de Singapur, declarada el monumento nacional del país. Es el único monumento de la cultura budista de Singapur que está guardado por el estado.

La construcción del templo se lo debe a un empresario y mecenas chino, Low Kim Pong, que trasladó a Singapur. Según dice la crónica, una vez en sueño vio una luz de oro que brillaba en la parte occidental. Al despertar, Low Kim Pong vino a la orilla izquierda del río y dentro de poco encontró a un grupo de budistas que iban de Sri Lanka a China del Sur. Entre ellos fue el monje de un antiguo monasterio chino, Sichan, que sorprendió mucho a Low Kim Pong debido a su alto nivel espiritual. Así, él decidió construir el templo para él.

El convento Lian Shan Shuang Lin cuyo nombre poético traduce como ‘El templo de la contemplación del bosquecillo doble de la Montaña de Lotus’ fue construido entre 1898 y 1902. Después de la inauguración, fue el templo budista más grande de Asia Sudeste. Lian Shan Shuang Lin fue elevado según todas las tradiciones de la arquitectura sagrada china y representaba un patio rectangular cerrado dentro del cual están emplazadas los recintos del convento.

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los recintos originales del templo sufrieron mucho daño. Sin embargo, fueron renovados hace poco. La reconstrucción fue encargada a los maestros de las regiones meridionales de China. En general, la arquitectura y interiores del convento representan una mezcla de distintos estilos. Ese maridaje está considerado el rasgo más característico de Lian Shan Shuang Lin. Durante el último renovación, el templo obtuvo una nueva pagoda de siete niveles con una cumbre dorada representa una copia de la pagoda que tiene 800 años y se localiza en el monasterio budista en la provincia china Fujian.

Getting lost in this ornate, peaceful, sprawling complex is great fun. It's free to visit and easily accessible by bus. I came on a Sunday at around noon and basically had the place to myself.
