Ya más de cien años, un recinto original de la iglesia católica de San José adorna el centro financiero de la urbe. Su edificio impecable es declarado el monumento nacional. La historia del templo se origina a mediados del siglo XIX cuando de estado indio de Goa a Singapur llegó el sacerdote singapurense y fundo ahí una misión católica.

Tras su muerte en 1859, él dejó su dinero y un lote de tierra, comprado para la construcción de un templo. El propio rey de Portugal donó la suma que faltaba. Tres años después, en Singapur elevaron una iglesia de San José (Church of São José) que fue demolida un medio siglo después.

En 1912, en vez de ella elevaron una majestuosa catedral de San José, que de repente se convirtió en una de las tarjetas de visita de Singapur. El edificio construido en estilo gótico caracteriza por la dominación de la tradición portuguesa. El rasgo característico de la sagrada católica es la torre octagonal coronada por una cúpula. La principal está flanqueada por dos chapiteles laterales. Así, el recinto de la catedral de San José es una cierta guía en la parte colonial de Singapur.
