Fountain of Wealth

How to get there by Singapore MRT. Singapore interactive metro guide.

The Fountain of Wealth will form part of a tourist's memory of Singapore, long after they have returned to their native land. In 1998, it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fountain in the world: with the giant, almost 14-meter-high construction weighing 85 tons and occupying an area of 1683 square meters. The Fountain of Wealth is situated in the grounds of the country’s largest complex, Suntec City, which consists of trade, entertainment, exhibition and business centers.

As with the majority of structures in Singapore, the fountain is built according to Taoist feng shui practices. It is shaped as a large ring, which is supported by four tilted pillars. Four bearings symbolize four basic nations that make up city-state’s population, as well as its four major religions. According to Hindu beliefs, the ring embodies spiritual unity, equality and harmony between all of the Singaporean sects. The fountain is made of silicon bronze – a combination that represents the path to success and wealth, according to oriental popular beliefs.

If you look at the Suntec City complex from above, it would appear to represent a huge human hand. Its fingers and the thumb are four unusually shaped skyscrapers and a tower, while the fountain spouts from its center (or palm). From this view you can see feng shui principle again: the water flows not from the center to the outer extremities, but instead drains down into the center. This symbolizes the accumulation of power, success and wealth.

Singaporeans believe that performing a simple ritual at the fountain can draw wealth and prosperity into that person’s life. The fountain consists of two parts: one large and one smaller feature that is located inside the first. Several times a day, the large fountain is switched and at this moment, attendees should approach the small fountain, make a material wish and sink their right hand in it. Keeping the hand in the water and constantly repeating the wish, one should walk around the fountain three times. This, apparently, will make the wish come true. There is one condition, however: you should always approach the Fountain of Wealth with good intentions. The enduring success and prosperity of Singapore would suggest that this is a principle that actually works.

Spectacular laser shows and musical performances are carried out near to the fountain every evening.

Important! In order to avoid queues, visitors are let to the Fountain of Wealth in small groups, staggered across the following periods of time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., 2 – 6 p.m., 7 – 7:50 p.m. and 9:30 – 10 p.m.

Circle the inner fountain 3 times in a clockwise direction while scooping the water. Some would even scoop the water and put it into their pockets. It's a symbolic representation of inviting wealth.

The towers around the fountain represent a hand and the fountain is in the palm of the hand - so it's like the hand holding wealth. Great laser light show!
